How we wound up in the country
Monday, October 1st, 2007My wife and I got started as we were both interested in middle ages reenactment. (where I learned to blacksmith) and we decided that eventually we wanted to get some land out in the country to camp on and hunt. Then I got laid off in STL and we relocated to Columbia Mo as I was able to find a better job there. after a year we bought a Victorian house in a little town about 30 minutes away from work for a dirt cheap price (49k and the major stuff was already done new power/pipes central air and heat) That next spring we got married and a hail storm got the roof replaced. we started a garden and started learning about canning and raising vegetables but we still wanted land.
A couple years later we found the “dream house” a little (2025 sq ft house) on 20 acres with multiple out buildings we could afford (89k) and like the last house it had a new roof / electric and was soon to have the kitchen replaced due to a pipe break, so my wife was even able to pick out cabinets and counter tops. So we have our little slice of the dream with an established orchard with 200+ assorted fruit trees, established fields with alfalfa/clover mixed hay, we started our goat heard with a boer buck and an alpine doe. Then came a boer doe and with the money from the first haying we bought 3 tagenburg does.
Currently it is a hobby but we are working on growing it like our vegetables, organically. We don’t want to rush it just take our time and do it right. What ever right is.
