Inside the Mind of the Celtic Savage

This is how I see the larger orginization of Heathens in my own Microcosm of Heathenry. I am using plain english where as the heathen terms where I would normally associate with would cause confusion as it seems that everyone has a different interpretation of their meaning, Kindred, Theod etc.

I view it such as this. If you are a member of a group of people that comes together to worship those people are your spiritual family. Someone functions as priest and there is wyrd intermingled on with the sharing of the horn. I still consider people in this manner my spiritual family even though there is no hold oath.

Since I follow a tribalistic form of heathenry, Hold oaths are held at a much higher degree. In a tribe many families come together under one chieftain, for mutual benefit.

I think that it is possible that a large spiritual family the priest or god person would would assume some of the same duties as the chieftain, But with out a web of oaths the family unit would not have that person control the fate and wellbeing of the others.

In a tribal setting the chieftain is responsible for the welfare of all the families under their charge. It is possible that the tribe would have a official duties for some of the members, ie priest, secretary, etc…

However if one is a member of a family they may or may not be members of a tribe as their needs and wants of the individual dictate their involvement.

About Oath’s.
An Oath is the most sacred thing that one can take upon and should not be taken lightly. I have only held or given a few oaths in my lifetime and when one makes an hold oath it is a serious matter. I believe that is the reason why there are so many broken homes today is that oaths are given too freely.

For example my marriage to my wife and my adoption to my son are both legally binding hold oaths recognized by the state. To be released of those oaths one would have to convince the courts that the reasoning is just. I feel that the same is true for those that give a hold oath.

When I joined with the Frank’s I made a hold oath with my man Rick Windau. It was after many years of knowing Rick, and trusting him that I was able to accept him as a member of my family. I could not have made an oath to him, with out accepting him as a member of my family. As such I have a higher regard of Rick, then the man who gave me my name, as Rick has never broken his oath to my family.

As far as holding oaths with oath breakers. I don’t and I can’t, and I won’t.

I feel that is most appropriate to start with the Voluspa, as such everything has a definitive beginning and end however all Spae is up for interpretation. I would also like to point out that the actions predicted in spae although difficult are changeable. Therefore, it is very well possible that ragnarok will not happen as foretold if the key events leading up to it can be altered. Only the Norns know all that is going into the tapestry of life and the patter can change at their whim. Although it also heeds warning that after the terrible battle at Ragnarok that the earth will be reborn by those that hide deep within the roots of Yggdrassil, as the children of the gods rebuild the other nine worlds led by Baldur.

The last discussion I partook of the Voluspa had been derailed as we hit a HOLY CRAP moment going through it line by line when in stanza 14 when they mention of the dwarves and specifically Gloi. The Heavner runestone in translates as a protection to or from Gloi. About the time the Vikings were tearing across Vinland, there was a large earthquake in the New Madrid seismic zone that would include modern-day Heavener. As such since the Dwarves ring in the earthquakes, it pretty much guarantees the existence of Viking settlers in Oklahoma. I just wish that in the early 1900’s they wouldn’t have desecrated graves looking for Indian artifacts as although it was noted that there were items of no known native American tribe they were sold off as souvenirs as Native American or just destroyed.

Guess what another freaking tornado. And in January

It is funny…. Every single time something changes in my life there is a Tornado. I see it as a omen a physical representation of my patron deity on earth. A written account of the the temple at Uppsala by Adam of Bremen states

Thor takes the central position, with Wotan and Frey on either side. Thor, according to their beliefs, governs the air with its thunder, lightning, wind, rain, and fair weather. He is depicted carrying a scepter, much as our people depict Jove.

It is interesting to say the least everytime there is a important life changing event for me it is immediately followed with a tornado.

I get married to steph… and as soon as our vows are made, and the recession hits the pavilion, the tornado sirens go off and a tornado warning is issued for boone county. May 10th 2003

He adopts a child…. And on the way home has to take shelter from a tornado while driving on the road. That night he takes shelter from a F3 that passes over his farm and then proceeds to kill 4 people in the next town over. March 12 2005

And now his family hosts quite possibly the best Yule celebration that they have ever attended… The following day after the event in January mind you it gets up to 70 degrees and what was a 30% chance of rain turns into a super cell and kicks off a tornado. January 7 2008

Judging by the signs of it all this is a good omen indeed. Because once again Thor’s servant is protected and tornado precedes a significant life changing event.
